Yirgacheffe is part of the Sidamo region in southern Ethiopia. Yirgacheffe’s coffee is so well known that it has been subdivided into its own micro-region. The land is steep, green, fertile and high. Yirgacheffe’s hills seem thickly forested, but actually it is a heavily populated region containing villages and what is known as ‘garden coffee.’
Approximately 26 cooperatives in the region, representing some 43,794 farmers and 62,004 hectares of garden coffee. The production is predominantly washed, although a smaller amount of sun dried coffees also come out of this region, including this Gelana Abaya.
Roughly 85 percent of the locals still live rurally and work in agriculture; each family lives in a modest home (often a single mud hut) and works their own plot of land, were they grow crops to sell, and crops for consumption. In Yirgacheffe the main selling crop is coffee.
This coffee is sorted into three grades by weight (heavy, medium and floaters), fermented for 16-48 hours, washed and then graded again. The beans are then dried on African beds, where they are often sorted by the women of the villages.
